Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson finished second and third, respectively.

“I’ve been honored and blessed with this opportunity. Since I was a kid this was a lifelong goal and a dream of mine. I’m just so thankful,” Henry said at the podium after being presented the trophy.

Henry captured 378 of 928 possible first-place votes. McCaffrey was second with 290 first-place votes.

Henry, a junior from Florida, led the nation and set an SEC record with 1,986 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns for the second-ranked Crimson Tide, who are in the College Football Playoff for the second straight year.

Henry, who joins Mark Ingram as the only Alabama players to have won the award, broke a five-year streak of quarterbacks winning college football’s highest individual honor. 

No. 2 Alabama plays No. 3 Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Eve as part of the College Football Playoff semifinals.
